山村淳平さんについて
1980年大学卒業後、山形県の病院で3年間、研修医をつとめる。その後、東京都清瀬市の結核研究所で過去の膨大な量のデータを整理し分析する作業を経験したことが、後々の仕事に役立つ。1990年代アジアやアフリカで被災民や難民キャンプの支援活動にかかわる。海外での経験から、「病気の原因というものは患者だけにもとめられるものではない」ことを実感、社会構造の問題が背景にあることに気付く。「社会的弱者、女性や子ども、少数派にしわよせがゆき、病気をひきおこしている。（中略）社会の底辺に位置づけられる貧困層や少数民族は、とりわけ犠牲をしいられる」「少数派の状況をさぐってこそ、社会の本質をより正確にとらえられるのである」「世界でおきている出来事にせっして、わたしは社会に目をひらかされた。この時点で、 わたしは病気をなおすだけの医者ではなくなった。自身の身を多数派側におくことも、しなくなった。」

In October, we will hear a talk by Dr. Jumpei Yamamura from Minato-machi Clinic in Yokohama.

About Dr. Jumpei Yamamura
After graduating from university in 1980, Dr. Yamamura worked for three years as a resident physician at a hospital in Yamagata Prefecture. He then joined the Research Institute of Tuberculosis in Kiyose, Tokyo, where he organized and analyzed a large volume of historical data—an experience that later proved invaluable.
In the 1990s, he became involved in relief activities for disaster victims and refugee camps in Asia and Africa. Through his overseas experience, he realized that “the causes of illness cannot be sought only in the patient,” but that social structures often lie behind them. He notes: “Socially vulnerable groups—women, children, minorities—bear the brunt of hardship, leading to illness. The poor and ethnic minorities placed at the bottom of society are particularly forced to make sacrifices. By examining the situation of minorities, one can grasp the essence of society more accurately. Facing what is happening in the world opened my eyes to society. From this point on, I was no longer just a doctor who treats diseases, and I stopped placing myself on the side of the majority.”
